Upright Meaning
The Devil card confronts us with one of the most psychologically rich images in the entire tarot. The Baphomet-like figure looms above two chained figures — a man and a woman — who bear a striking resemblance to the couple in The Lovers card. But look closely: the chains around their necks are loose. They could slip free at any moment. The chains we carry are almost always the ones we have chosen, whether consciously or not.
When The Devil appears in a reading, it is calling your attention to the places where you are bound — by addiction, compulsion, negative thinking, toxic relationship dynamics, or materialistic excess. These chains may feel inescapable, but the card's central message is that your bondage is largely self-created and therefore can be self-released.
This card does not shame you for the shadow aspects of your nature. The Devil is the archetype of the shadow self — all the drives, fears, and impulses that polite society asks you to deny. But what is repressed does not disappear; it merely operates from the unconscious, sabotaging your best intentions. The invitation of this card is courageous: look at your shadow directly, understand its nature, and reclaim the energy it has been consuming.
The Devil can also represent materialism, the pursuit of pleasure to the point of self-destruction, or a situation where you are prioritizing short-term gratification at the expense of long-term freedom and wellbeing.
Reversed Meaning
When The Devil is reversed, it is often a highly positive sign that liberation is near. You are becoming aware of a bondage that has been operating below the level of consciousness, and in that awareness lies the beginning of freedom. The chains are loosening. A period of detox, breakaway, or deep self-examination is either underway or about to begin.
Reversed, this card can also indicate that the release from bondage is happening too abruptly — that old patterns and addictions are returning after a brief period of freedom, or that the liberation is incomplete. The work of genuine transformation requires more than a single breakthrough.
In a Love Reading
The Devil in love is often a serious card, pointing to unhealthy attachment, obsession, or a relationship dynamic driven more by dependency, fear, or compulsion than by genuine love. It asks you to be honest about whether a relationship is based on authentic connection or on patterns of control, manipulation, or mutual need that keeps both people small. It is also possible this card is pointing to extraordinary passion and chemistry — but urging you to ensure that passion has a foundation deeper than physical attraction. Reversed in love, it often signals the beginning of the end of a toxic pattern, and the courageous choice to break free.
In a Career Reading
The Devil in career readings can indicate a job or professional environment that feels like a trap — golden handcuffs, a toxic workplace, or a career path that is lucrative but soul-deadening. It may also point to addictive behaviors around work: overwork, compulsive productivity, or the use of career success as a substitute for genuine fulfillment. This card asks whether your professional life is truly serving your deeper purpose. Reversed, it signals the courage to leave a limiting professional situation and choose freedom over familiarity.
Key Symbolism
- The inverted pentagram on The Devil's forehead represents the inversion of spiritual values — the material world dominating the spiritual rather than being guided by it.
- The loose chains around the figures' necks are the card's most important detail: they are not locked, revealing that the bondage is chosen and can be released.
- The torches held by the figures symbolize their own complicity — they are burning themselves with the same energy that could light their way to freedom.
- The bat wings reference the shadow and the unconscious — the Devil thrives in the dark places we refuse to examine.
